From the arctic to the tropics, from shallow coastal water to the open sea, sharks thrive in every part of the world's oceans. For hundreds of millions of years, sharks have ruled the oceans at the top of the food chain. Millions of years of evolution have created finely-tuned senses and animals supremely adapted to their environment. Hardly primitive, these streamlined predators are among the least understood animals on Earth.
Sharks: Master of Survival takes a look at the range of sharks that thrive in the oceans, from pelagic sharks that live in the open sea, like the Blue shark and the Oceanic White-tip, to coastal sharks that prefer reefs and shallow water, like the Caribbean reef shark. Viewers meet the largest fish on Earth, the Whale shark, and learn how satellite tagging is teaching us new information about the travels of these massive animals, which can reach 50 feet long.
In Hawaii, we meet shark researcher Kanesa Duncan who is studying baby Scalloped Hammerheads, and Dean Grubbs who is studying a virgin population of Sandbar sharks. Off Rhode Island, we join Charlie Donilon on his dive boat where he tags Blue sharks for the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service. And in the Pacific, we watch the aggressive feeding behavior of a Gray Reef shark feeding frenzy.
From the aggressive Great White and Tiger shark to the gentle Basking shark and White-tip reef shark, this film introduces viewers to the breadth of shark species and their clever methods for survival. Adaptations such as low-light vision, electrosensory reception , and an acute sense of smell makes the shark one of the most amazing animals in existence.
Although sharks have thrived on Earth 100 times longer than humans, their reign is threatened. Unrelenting, unsustainable fishing practices are destroying populations of sharks all around the world. Without immediate protection, many species of sharks are heading for extinction. The masters of survival may have finally met their match. Sharks: Masters of Survival shows why we should care about these impressive animals.
