They are the forgotten, the drug addicted, the mentally ill and the homeless who inhabit a hellish labyrinth of abandoned subway stations, dead-end tunnels and centuries-old waterworks beneath the streets of New York City. They are called the “Mole People”.
“Mole People: Life in the World Below”, is a dramatic, up-close and personal look at the real-life stories of people who have turned desperate situations into a remarkable subterranean lifestyle. The Mole People once lived in shantytowns and makeshift communities established in the maze of subway and train tunnels under the city. But, today they are forced to lead a more perilous, nomadic existence as transit police and cleanup crews work to rid the tunnels of their presence, even as the city’s shelter system operates beyond maximum capacity.
“Mole People” follows tunnel dweller Harry Ecclesiaste and his best friend Jean Chery as they struggle to acquire jobs, secure apartments, and escape the temptations of life underground. “Mole People” also meets Mark, a former subway motorman who has lived underground for six years.
